Abstract This study examines the lexical ategorization of“ na”-appended katakana words borrowed from English. The 234“na”-appended katakana words were extracted from the Sūpā Daijirin Sanseido, 2004) and their relationship between English and Japanese parts of speech and their linguistic behaviors of“ sa”-derivation in Japanese were observed. The following results were obtained. (1) The“ na”-appended katakana words are mainly borrowed from English adjectives. (2) Their linguistic behaviors are as same as adjectival verbs or noun and adjectival verbs but some adjectival verbs have nominal function. (3) As for the“ sa”-derivation in“ na”-appended katakana words, their linguistic behaviors are as same as adjectival verbs, but the percentage of“ sa”-derivation in“ na”-appended katakana words is lower than the one in adjectival verbs.
