抄録: The purpose of this paper is to compare two Japanese writers in the late Showa era, Yukio Mishima and Ryo Hanmura, to understand the self-defense force in postwar Japan and examine the relation between politics and society. In the 1960s, Yukio Mishima made remarks on politics and military through experimental entry to the self-defense force and founded a private militia, "Tatenokai (Shield Society)." In 1970, he called on the self-defense force for coups to amend the Constitution and committed suicide. In this paper, based on the works of Mishima and interviews with three members of Tatenokai, the author reveals that Mishima's image on the self-defense force was different from the view of the former Japanese army. Ryo Hanmura is a writer who left many sci-fi and popular novels, and his works reflect war experiences in his juvenile time. In this paper, by summarizing his works from the 1970s to 1990s, the author clarifies Hanmura's view on the relation between self-defense force and civil society, and his critical attitude toward real politics.
