Abstract: The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of studying aloud on English vocabulary learning by Japanese learners. It was hypothesized that studying aloud is more effective than silent study. On the contrary, no effectiveness was found for studying aloud. An additional questionnaire survey was conducted and it revealed that many of the subjects used katakana words when they read the target words and they didn’t care about the correct pronunciation of the target words.
