Abstract: The present study investigated skin potential activity (SPA) changes accompanying menstrual cycle. The subjects were 77 unmarried undergraduates (19-23yr.) without a severe menstrual distress. The menstrual cycle for each subject was adjusted to a classical 28 days cycle and divided into seven 4 days phases. The SPA derived from left palmar thenar eminence were recorded during rest and binaural presentation of auditory stimuli (30 tone bursts, 80dB, 1000Hz). The skin potential level (SPL) during the whole menstrual cycle had a similar change to the well-known basal body temperature curve; SPL fell steeply from the onset of the menstrual flow, gradually elevated from the pre-ovulation phase to the post-ovulation phase and stayed at a higher level during the early and late premenstrual phase. Among seven 4 days phases, the SPL in the post-ovulation phase were significantly higher than those in any other phase, suggesting the prominent autonomic arousal change around ovulation. The number of skin potential response (SPR) had no significant change due to menstrual cycle.
