Objectives: The purpose of this study was to explore the trends and areas of nursing research on safety management and discuss issues regarding evidence-based education in undergraduate nursing programs. Methods: Related literature published between 2002-2006 was identified by searching the Igaku Chuo Zasshi database. 932 research papers were analyzed using a format that consisted of research design, method, subject, and so on. The contents focused on developing a classification on the basis of original categories. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize the data regarding the selected papers. Result: The number of papers each year ranged from 137 to 224. Of the 932 papers, the most common research design was survey research (407, 43.8%), followed by evaluation research (276, 29.6%). The most common data collection method was the use of an original questionnaire. The content most focused on was 'planning, implementing, devising, and evaluating measures for preventing accidents in medical health and welfare institutions' (471, 50.5%). All research papers could be classified into the original categories. There were no specific trends in the research over the five years. Conclusion: It is necessary to enhance the research that becomes the evidence for safety management education. Eight areas of nursing research on safety management were identified. These are useful for considering safety management education in undergraduate nursing programs.
