| Abstract: | Hayes(1989) proposes through the description of compensatory lengthening a moraic theory in which the timing slot is not employed. His theory is not adequate in that some types of compensatory lengthening in English are not accounted for. If the timing slot is reintroduced into the moraic theory, the types of compensatory lengthening will be dealt with. Some modifications of the syllabification method will also be needed with the reintroduction of the timing slot. |
