Abstract: Consonants in Japanese are palatalized before the palatal glide /y/ and the vowel /i/. From the perspective of Optimally Theory, the palatalization is not one and the same process and must be treated under two different constraints. The glide is deleted after palatalizing the consonant preceeding it, but the vowel is not deleted. The palatalization is opaque before the glide and transparent before the vowel. The difference is reflected in the character of the two constraints.
