Abstract: The x-ray-excited M4.5N4.5X(X=O1, O2.3, and N6.7) Auger spectra as well as the 3d x-ray photoelectron spectra in La metal are taken at 20K and room temperature, and at two kinds of typical takeoff angles : surface-sensitive and bulk-sensitive. A comparison of the Auger spectra shows that the M4iiNt.iNs.7 component of a bulk Auger spectrum at 20K is higher in intensity than those of all the other Auger spectra which have the nearly same weight. The La 3d x-ray photoelectron spectra are, however, quite similar to one another. Therefore, taking account of low-energy electronic properties and a finite probability of highly screening processes in the initial state of the Auger transition, the tendency in intensity of the M4.5N4.5N6.7 component seems to reflect rather emphatically on the electronic properties in the ground state. The result reveals that the x-ray-excited Auger electron spectroscopy might be the prospect for a powerful tool in the study of electronic properties in condensed matters.
