Abstract: | The valence-band spectra of CrCl3 and CrBr3 have been measured by x-ray photoemission spectroscopy. Neither the appearance of a satellite nor the extreme narrowing of a main line are found in contrast to the case of Ni-compounds. With regard to the appearance of the satellite these halides contrast with Cr2O3 where the satellite accompanies the main line, though both of them belong to the trivalent Cr-compound. Ligand-field theory without taking account of charge transfer is applicable to describe the observed spectra, and an existing energy-band calculation does not appear to explain the results obtained here. |
