Purpose : The present study aimed to reveal occupational health nurses' need for a system of cooperation between regional and occupational health service systems and the issues related to developing such a system by focusing on occupational health nurses working in regions considered to have inadequate systems of cooperation. Methods : Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 10 occupational nurses working in Prefecture A. Nurses were asked about items such as their "experience cooperating with community health institutions," "the effects of the cooperation," and "factors blocking cooperation." The results were analyzed according to Berelson's content analysis. Results : Eight categories were extracted as necessary for cooperation between regional and occupational health service systems, including "continuous support for retiring employees," and "mental health support." Four categories were extracted as issues for developing a cooperative system, including "inadequacy and lack of government counseling services" and "construction of a system allowing a regional health service system to take over support for retiring employees." Conclusion : Occupational health nurses have a need for cooperation between regional and occupational health service systems. The results suggested that the development of a cooperative system requires construction of an interactive relationship to allow information to be shared more easily, as well as establishment of an organization to promote cooperation via several approaches.
